Why Utilising Real Time Tracking Can Help You Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

by CMS Supatrak

GPS Tracking has many advantages but did you know that utilising a vehicle tracking system can actively help to reduce your carbon footprint? At a time of great unrest where fuel is concerned thanks to rapidly rising fuel costs and the price of oil now at the highest it has ever been, businesses and especially those that rely on vehicles to trade are feeling the pinch.

Combined with increased pressure on businesses to undertake some Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) with regards to environmental issues, businesses are only now realising the full benefits of real time GPS tracking systems to combat both these issues.

Over the years, developments in wireless telematics have made vehicle tracking systems an essential component of all successful fleet management plans. Their popularity has been largely due to their ability to pinpoint a vehicles location exactly but in more recent years because of their reporting and analytic capabilities.

With the ability to access information about a vehicles position, speed and distance covered combined with detailed reports concerning the driver and their driving style, fleet managers can now accurately work out fuel consumption levels and make important decisions based upon this information.

Not only can this help to demonstrate a company’s compliance with ‘Duty of Care’ and other legal obligations but it can also reduce fleet running costs with regards to both wear and tear on vehicles and fuel costs. When it comes to fleet management, companies both large and small rely on their vehicles in order to trade so it stands to reason that they would want to ensure that all vehicles are in perfect working order.

Vehicle tracking systems thus provide multiple benefits to the companies that use them, allowing them to report on and monitor aspects relating to vehicle financing, vehicle maintenance, vehicle telematics, driver management, fuel management and safety management all of which can contribute to the effective running of a fleet.

If in conclusion then, an effective and efficient fleet of vehicles is one that performs outstandingly, yet conforms to safety regulations and operates on the lowest possible amount of money from the business, then GPS tracking can definitely help achieve this.

Given that modern fleet managers now have more and more issues to worry about, including unnecessary carbon emissions, quality vehicle tracking systems can help you stamp out emissions without cutting corners.

A Greener Home Begins in the Kitchen

by Virginia Ginsburg

Copyright (c) 2008 Virginia Ginsburg

There is a lot of information in the news today about global climate change and the challenges associated with it. The human race has always put a strain on natural resources, and for decades scientists have been concerned about the affect this has on the health of our planet, but at no time has it been the mainstream concern that it is today.

When we think of big concerns like the entire planet, it can be difficult to imagine how any single individual can make an impact, but the old adage of "think globally, act locally," has never been more appropriate. You can in fact make a difference in the world by making a few simple changes in your home to reduce your negative impact on the world.

1. Buy organic The US organic food community has been slowly building a multi-billion dollar alternative to industrial agriculture over the past three decades. In addition to some of the trail blazers, mainstream brands are also jumping on the bandwagon as they recognize consumers' demand for organic options. You can now find organic produce in most grocery stores. Remember that there are organic options for almost every item in your pantry, including staples like flour, pasta and canned goods, that can be produced without toxic pesticides.

2. Bigger packages; less packaging Whenever possible, buy products in bulk to avoid the plastic packaging that goes into most food items. The recent trend towards 100-calorie snack bags may be great for our waistlines, but it can increase the packaging of the same amount of product by 20 times. Instead, buy in bulk and repackage smaller quantities in reusable packaging. It ends up being a benefit to your wallet as well!

3. Recycle Many of the items used in the kitchen can be recycled, and it is a natural place in which to house your recycling bin. Most cities easily accept cans, bottles and paper products. Check your local recycling center for other packaging products like plastic and Styrofoam. Keep your recycling bin right next to your trash can, and always consider which bin it belongs in before automatically tossing it in the trash.

4. Use recycled products From paper towels, a staple in most kitchens, to paper napkins, paper plates and other paper-based materials, you can close the loop on your recycling efforts by choosing products made from recycled products. Recycled products are usually made up of a percentage of recycled content such as newspapers, and they work just as well as traditional products.

5. Green energy Your appliances can use a significant amount of electricity, so the next time that you are replacing them, look for the Energy Star seal, which means that the appliance has been certified to have a low rate of energy use. Also look into your lighting - if you have traditional incandescent bulbs, replace them with one of many energy saving alternatives. As with many "green" choices, you will save your wallet as well as the Earth!

6. Shopping bag savvy How much plastic do you waste every year by using shopping bags only once? You can reuse the free shopping bags that you get from the grocery store for years if you take care of them properly. When it comes to shopping bags, the options are many, and bags range from trendy to basic, from canvas to recycled plastic or even, in some cases, vintage clothing refashioned into stylish totes. Keep 5-10 in your car at all times, and, more importantly, use them!

If everyone in the U.S. took just one of these six steps, the damage that we are doing to our environment would be reduced. So think about it - what can you do today to make an impact on tomorrow?

Water Powered Car

by Gordon Powles

Is it really possible to have a water powered car?

Fuel price are going up like crazy at the moment and there seems to be no stop to this price increase war of the fuel prices. Owning and driving a car is getting more and more expensive as the fuel prices keep rising.

Where there's a problem, there must be a solution.

A Scientist has found a way to convert your car into a hydrogen fuel car that can run on water, that's right water, (a water powered car). No longer will you need to pay for the high price fuel.

You can simply add water into your car and runs the same as using fuel.

So how do you convert your car to a water powered car? That is the big question you ask.

You will have to install a hydrogen fuel cell car engine in your car to allow it to combust water to produce the energy. Luckily, installing a hydrogen fuel cell engine to your car is simple and very easy.

Just imagine the amount of fuel you will be saving when you run your car on water. Because it can even run on salt water, and sea water is free of charge for you to use to run your car.

Having a water powered car not only helps you to save money on fuel, you are also helping planet earth by emitting less pollution to the environment. Converting your car into a water powered car is not as difficult as you think it. With a proper manual that can guide you through the whole process step by step, the whole process of converting your car into water powered car can be done for under $100 using half a day.

The basic principle is by using electrolysis (electricity) water can be converted into two types of flammable gases - Hydrogen and Oxyhydrogen. This is done by rearranging the same three atoms found in water H2O into a different molecular structure, you get a gas called HHO that burns very well and releases a lot of energy in the process.

The source of electricity you need to convert water is found in the car battery. However, you will need to know how to use the car battery to electrolyze the water to convert into either Hydrogen gas or Oxyhydrogen gas. Once converted you will also have to navigate this gas into your gas tank to mix with the gasoline. By doing this, you are converting water into fuel, using water as an alternative fuel for your car and making water powered car.

When you are driving, your car battery will turn some of the water to gas, which will act as an energy supplement to the gas you pump into your car. By converting your car to a water powered car, you will increase your mileage and save a lot of money. It estimated that it is a 40% saving in fuel costs. To make your water powered car, you will need professional guidance or at least an experienced mechanic to modify your car to run on water.

You can find out a step-by-step guide on how to turn you car into a water powered car here.

We Could Fix the Gas Crises Tomorrow

by David Rosenak

We could solve the gas crises tomorrow! That's right, literally, tomorrow. And no, it's not complicated, not difficult, it doesn't require enormous sacrifice or investment. The average driver, without replacing the car they have, and without changing the miles they drive, could reduce their fuel consumption by 20% simply by driving sanely.

When approaching a stop or a turn, take your foot off the gas a block before - if you have never done it, you'll be amazed at how far a car can coast without appreciably slowing. When accelerating, lightly touch the pedal, don't jump on it. Take your foot off the gas pedal anytime to slow down, rather than to use the brake, coast down hills and highway ramps. On the highway, keep a full two second gap between you and the car ahead, so you can drive at a steady pace - most drivers in heavy traffic are continuously braking and re-accelerating, wasting gas. And perhaps most importantly, most cars have maximum fuel efficiency at 55 to 60 mph. At speeds above that efficiency falls off precipitously. At 75 mph you use one third more gas per mile you drive than you do at 55. Keep your car maintained - clean air filter and fuel filter, fresh oil, and particularly, properly inflated tires are all important elements in improving fuel efficiency.

Try it! You may find that besides saving a bunch of money, that you'll feel good about yourself, good about helping your Nation and helping Planet Earth.

Do you really think that the few minutes you might save by driving like a maniac is worth keeping ourselves dependent and beholden to the dictators who control the world's remaining supply of oil? Is it really worth burning up this precious resource that we are stealing from our children, our grandchildren, and future generations? Is it really worth polluting the air we breathe, and the atmosphere that regulates the planet's climate?

At this time, the world's ability to pump oil out of the ground is just equal to the rate at which the world is burning it up. Oil prices are determined by a worldwide market. There are millions of speculators who are betting that the world will continue to burn it up faster, and that supply will not be able to keep up.

Fully one quarter of the world supply of oil is consumed in the United States. If The United States could show the national resolve to reduce gas consumption by even 10%, that would produce an immediate surplus of 2 million barrels of oil a day - within days there would be no place to store that much oil. Speculators would jump off the oil market like rats off a sinking ship. The price of a barrel of oil on the world market would Tumble.

Of course, reducing gas consumption through driving for fuel efficiency is just a step. The longer term solution is to trade-in the gas guzzlers for far more efficient vehicles, and eventually, to find the energy source that will replace oil as a fuel.

We once had a National leader who resolved to put a man on the moon! Where is the National leader who will resolve to end our dependence on oil?

Say No to Paper or Plastic- Go Green!

by Suzanne Macguire

Environmental degradation is one of the greatest causes of concern spearing up its head these days. A little cooperation on our part can work wonders to save the environment. Cooperation can begin at individual level by ensuring that the articles of daily use are environmental-friendly. Research suggests that almost 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed and discarded annually worldwide! This is alarming indeed as plastic bags are not biodegradable- they break up into smaller toxic particles, contaminating both soil and water. So the next time the clerk at your favorite grocery store asks whether you prefer paper or plastic, give an environmental-friendly answer by choosing "neither".

People, in general, are under the misconception that paper bags are better than the plastic ones. But this alternative carries its own set of environmental problems. According to the American Forest and Paper Association, in 1999 the U.S. alone used 10 billion paper grocery bags- which adds up to a lot of trees! This is no good news for environmental activists who promote afforestation and tree-saving tactics.

The solution to this problem lies in the use of high quality reusable bags, emitting no residue to harm the environment during its production and can be easily reused. These bags are usually comprised of 80% post-consumer waste. Reusable grocery bags have a washable surface and are more spacious. Fashion conscious people can also take their pick of the wide range of eco-friendly bags available in soft and natural hues. These bags use natural fibers, which consume less energy during the production process. For instance, corn-based bags break down in landfills or composters in four to twelve weeks. This way the environment is kept safe of the disastrous hazards of plastic bags.

A number of eco-friendly companies have now come up with unique reusable bags- thereby acting as tools for increasing popular awareness for saving the environment from artificial hazards. These ethical alternatives can thus be a life-saving effort, not just for a few but for the multitude!

Shopping Without Shopping Bags - The Eco Friendly Alternatives

by Victor Epand

On an average, every person who goes shopping is given 280 carrier bags every year. That's almost 17,000 bags each in our lifetime, and what do we do with them all? Sadly the vast majority simply get thrown away. It takes about 20 years for a plastic bag to decompose. What were you doing twenty years ago? Did you buy something from a shop? It may well be that the shop you visited no longer exists, the items you bought long forgotten, but the plastic carrier bag is still sitting somewhere, a part of the natural environment we have created. This means that for every adult alive today there are 5,600 plastic carrier bags waiting to decompose. That's a horrible thought, and it's facts like these which can make us sit up and think about what we are doing to help or hinder this situation.

Last year, enough carrier bags were disposed of in the UK to weigh as much as 70,000 cars, and this is going on year after year. Yet all it really takes is a little thought. If each one of us spent a little extra time thinking about this problem it would be drastically reduced. Reusable carrier bags are available, and it is estimated that a cloth bag can save as much as 1,000 plastic carrier bags - or nearly four years' worth per person.

Shops pass the cost of these free carrier bags on to us as consumers, so we are paying the price in both monetary terms, and environmental terms, for our laziness and ignorance. Often we are handed our groceries in a carrier bag without so much as a thought by either the shop assistant or ourselves. I bought a chocolate bar the other day from my local supermarket, and they handed it to me in a plastic carrier bag! I took it out and handed the bag back to them; they almost seemed astonished that I wouldn't need a bag for my 'shopping'. What really got to me was that this particular chain of supermarkets is supposed to be having a drive on carrier bags, and only the day before I got given a free fridge magnet to remind me to take a reusable carrier bag with me to get my shopping to help save on unnecessary plastic ones. It seemed pretty clear that complacency and habit had overtaken any real concern for such initiatives.

The thing is, we don't see the animals in the wild chocking to death on the plastic rubbish we discard. We are blind to the oceans of plastic rubbish retched over the landscape and rotting in to the natural habitats of the creatures we are supposedly so fond of. Perhaps if these images were made more obvious we would be less complacent. I wonder how people would react if supermarkets printed pictures of animals chocking to death on plastic on the side of these carrier bags? Unlikely to ever become a popular marketing ply, but it's worth thinking about, not because other people should know better, but because we ourselves should accept that we are part of the problem.

Ironically, the supermarkets unpack the goods on their shelves from cardboard boxes, then crush and destroy these boxes, whilst handing out free plastic bags for us to repackage the good into. Using a cardboard box is much sturdier, more environmentally friendly, and can be re-used and recycled. Cloth bags can make a huge difference. Instead of 17,000 plastic bags we could easily get away with just 15 cloth bags in our lifetime. In addition to which, the cloth breaks down into harmless substances very quickly. It's worth a thought, isn't it?
